Glass is made from the three basic substances, sand, limestone and soda. The raw materials are crushed and, after adding scraps of broken glass and aggregates melted in glass furnace at high temperature. The correct dosing of the glass quantity which is taken out depends on the level of the surface of the molten mass. It must be kept constant to a few tenths of a millimetre.
The source with its shielding and the vertically aligned scintillation counter must be mounted on sturdy supports. The accurate adjustment of source height and detector height are easily achieved by monitoring the transmitter display or the output signal.
