Free Fall Bulk Flow Meter
A Berthold bulk flow gauge application

free fall bulk flow: vibrating conveyors

During "free fall", a non-contacting mass flow measurement can be performed at the delivery end of conveyor systems such as vibrating conveyors, screw conveyors, rotary dischargers, chain conveyors and conveyor belts. The material is irradiated during its "free fall" to determine the weight per area.

The material flow in tonnes / hour is calculated from the product of weight per area and material speed.

Outstanding features of the Berthold Bulk Flow Meter:

free fall bulk flow: screw conveyor

Non-contacting measurement

  • Minimum maintenance
  • No measurement errors caused by material deposited on the measuring device
  • No influence of air flows in the fall pipe or fall chute

Radiometric process

  • Unaffected by temperature and grain size variations
  • Minimal influence of moisture variations

241Am radiation source

  • Low radiation energy
  • No radiation protection areas in the vicinity of the measuring device
  • High measurement effect even for small material flows

Detector Sz A1 44/5

  • High long-term stability: +/- 0.1%
  • High sensitivity with the Na1 crystal, therefore low source activities required

Measuring System:

The measuring system illustrated above is used for measurements with the Free Fall Bulk Flow Meter on pipes.

The measuring system can simply be mounted onto existing pipes.

On chutes one uses frames and rod source holders as shown in the brochure LB 330-1C. Click here for more information on Berthold bulk flow gauges.

Radiation sources:

241Am or 137Cs rod sources

Detectors:

Sz A1 44/4 or Sz 5 N1 40/35 (see brochure LB 330-1C)

Evaluation electronics:

LB 330-1C evaluation unit or LB 332 compact unit

Application data required

Your inquiry should include the following data:

  1. Diameter of the pipe or dimension of the chute
  2. Maximum, minimum and normal conveyor loading in t/h
  3. Product specifications
  4. Minimum distance between free fall starting point and measuring point
  5. Proposed location of measuring device (if possible, including sketch or drawing).
