Engineered for numerous process applications

  • Mining Industry: to monitor density in coal, copper, soda ash or similar ore slurries
  • Power Industry: to measure % solids of limestone scrubber slurries and ash slurries
  • Paper Industry: to measure liquor concentrations, clay concentrations, lime mud, starch, and paper additives
  • Wood Pulp Industry: to measure pulp consistency
  • Food Industry: to measure bulk fill, spray dryer evaporation, and aeration

The ability to measure density without coming in contact with the liquids or solids is a distinct advantage to just about every industry. The evolution of technology and development of microprocessors, detectors, and sources has made the contactless method popular in processes requiring density measurement.

Principle of Operation The energy field emitted by a small gamma source is attenuated as it passes through the process material. This attenuation is proportional to the changes in material density, while the measuring distance is held constant, and this indicates product density. A precise and efficient scintillation crystal measures the energy field and supplies a digital signal to the microprocessor. Automatic drift compensation, incorporated in the scintillation crystal, compensates for the effects of temperature variation and component aging. This results in a high long-term repeatability of + 0.1%.

LB 389 Electronics The LB 389 is comprised of a single microprocessor and detector, an interconnecting cable is not required. The detector emits a signal that is transformed into an isolated current output signal 0/4-20 mA. Relay output is available for error indication. simple installation
Radiation Source and Shielding In most cases, the radiation source that is used is 137 Cs (half-life 30 years). The shielding container consists of a cast iron housing filled with lead. For very corrosive environmental conditions, a housing made of stainless steel will be supplied. Because of the sophisticated safe shielding design, the LB 389 is readily available under general licensing.
Scintillation Crystal Using the scintillation crystal as a detector allows the use of low source activities and small diameter radiation beams.

Retrofit Capabilities Because of the sensitivity and sophistication of Berthold's scintillation detector the unit can be easily retrofitted to existing density systems whose response and accuracy has deteriorated due to age. This enables the user to operate for many more years with the existing source.

Calibration A sophisticated calibration program allows precise start-up. The special properties of the product and the installation are automatically taken into consideration. Only one measuring point is needed for start-up, with up to 10 measuring input values to obtain optimum accuracy.
